Hospice of Marion County Healthcare Alliance

Hospice of Marion County is a full service Hospice, lovingly meeting the needs of the terminally ill and their families for two decades. Chartered in 1983, Hospice is a not-for-profit agency with a mission focused on providing professional care and volunteer assistance to Marion County residents dealing with life-limiting illnesses. While most patient care is delivered at home with family, friends and other caregivers close by Hospice also takes pride in its three residential facilities. Sylvia's and Estelle's Houses on Southeast 62nd Street, between Ocala and Belleview and most recently Summerfield Suites on Highway 441 just north of The Villages. A fourth residential facility is scheduled for completion in the Timber Ridge area in late 2003. Care is also available to clients in most Nursing Home and Assisted Living facilities.

Funding and reimbursement for services is provided through a number of sources including Medicare, Medicaid and most third-party insurance payers. There are no barriers to care and everyone with a terminal diagnosis and prognosis of six months or less is appropriate and will not be denied Hospice services regardless of ability to pay. Shortfalls caused as a result of this policy often exceed $500,000 annually and are met by memorial donations, fund raising projects and the financial support of a generous community. Hospice volunteers also operate three separate Thrift Stores with profits dedicated to patient care programs.

In 2002 Hospice of Marion County purchased Superior Residences of Summer Fields, an existing Memory Care and Assisted Living facility in South Marion County. Renamed "Summerfield Suites", this property now also houses an eight-bed Hospice facility. At the same time Florida Palliative Home Care was invited to join it's parent organization as a member of a new Hospice Healthcare Alliance. Also included in this group is Hospice's DME group and Pharmacy. The intent of the Hospice of Marion County Healthcare Alliance is to reduce costs for clients and provide compassionate, quality services in areas where public demand was high and where gaps in service were detected.

While some restrictions to Hospice care with regard to curative measures may apply, all Hospice of Marion County Healthcare Alliance programs are offered to all appropriate individuals and their families without regard to race, creed, color, sex, age, national origin, or religious background. For more information on any Alliance service, call 352-873-7400.
